A cycling tour of Eric Lyons’ most important developments in the Richmond and Twickenham area, many of which he designed for Span. The tour will include Parkleys, Fieldend, Mallard Place, and a number of other examples of Lyons’ projects in the area, giving an overview both of his standardised housing designs, and his more unique works.
Unlike most architects of his generation, Eric Lyons (1912-1980) worked predominantly within the private sector, designing houses for the Span development group. A large proportion of his work, much of which is listed, can be found in two London suburbs: Twickenham and Blackheath. Lyons worked for Walter Gropius and Maxwell Fry at the beginning of his career, and later developed a reputation for designing some of the best private housing of the Post-war period. He was also an important architectural polemicist, often appearing on the television, and served as RIBA President from 1975 to 1977.
Meet at 10am, Twickenham Station (about 20 minutes on the train from Waterloo, or 4 minutes from Richmond, which is at the end of the District Line and London Overground).
Finish at approx. 1.30pm, Richmond Station.

Participants must provide their own bikes (the area is not all covered by Boris Bikes). The route is mainly on quiet roads and cycle tracks, but participants must undertake the tour at their own risk and wearing a cycle helmet is advisable.
