Autumn Lecture Series - Twentieth Century Architects 25th October to 29th November 2018 - Complete Series

Autumn Lecture Series - Twentieth Century Architects 25th October to 29th November 2018 - Complete Series

A series of lectures to celebrate seven special architectural practices and the new books about them, recently published by Historic England and the C20 Society or in preparation.  The lectures will offer new insights and analyses of some great figures.

25 October: Mark Crinson:  Alison and Peter Smithson
There are many books by and about the Smithsons, but Crinson has supplied a first general study that offers new thinking on the famous couple.  He is the Assistant Dean for research in the Department of History of Art, Birkbeck, University of London.

1 November: Christine Hui Lan Manley:  Frederick Gibberd
Christine Hui Lan Manley has written the first biography of Gibberd, after completing a PhD on his work at the Glasgow School of Art.  She is an architect with Woods Hardwick in Bedford and teaches on architecture.

8 November: Elain Harwood and Alan Powers:  Ernö Goldfinger
Alan Powers and Elain Harwood need no introduction and are co-editors of the Twentieth Century Architects series.  They are writing a broad overview of Goldfinger’s long career, balancing existing books now out of print.

15 November: Geraint Franklin: Howell Killick Partridge and Amis
Howell Killick Partridge and Amis formed one of Britain’s key post-war practices after working for the London County Council on Alton West, producing some of Britain’s finest university buildings and much else.  Geraint Franklin is a historian with Historic England, now working on a study of John Outram Associates.

22 November: Two Liverpool architects: Herbert Rowse and F. X. Velarde
Iain Jackson, Simon Pepper and Peter Richmond: Herbert Rowse / Dominic Wilkinson and Andrew Crompton: Francis Xavier Velarde
A special Liverpool night!  Herbert Rowse was the leading local architect of the inter-war era, bringing rich invention and detailing in American-inspired classicism and moderne styles, while Velarde was an idiosyncratic church specialist.  Jackson, Pepper, Richmond and Crompton teach at the University of Liverpool, Wilkinson at Liverpool John Moore’s University.

29 November: Kenneth Powell: Arup Associates
Arup Associates was an arm of Ove Arup and Partners where architects, engineers and other professionals formed a multi-disciplinary practice.  Kenneth Powell’s joyous celebration of its varied work, including private houses, universities and offices among much else, is based on interviews with the participants and coincides with the reabsorption of the practice into its parent firm.  He is a prolific author and former director of the Twentieth Century Society.

All lectures are held on Thursdays at 6.30pm in the Gallery at 70 Cowcross Street, London EC1M 6EJ.  Admission includes a glass of wine. Publications will be available to purchase on the night.

Season ticket:   £40 members, £60 non-members, £25 students, £40 Historic England employees (work email address required on booking)
