C20 Ahmedabad,Corb, Kahn and modern architecture in India

C20 Ahmedabad, Corb, Kahn and modern architecture in India - 6.30pm Thursday 10th January 2019

ALLFORD HALL MONAGHAN MORRIS, Architects
Morelands, 5-23 Old Street, London EC1V 9HL (nearest tubes Old Street or Barbican)

Led by: Rabindra J Vasavada

Gujarat’s largest city, Ahmedabad is home to an extraordinary collection of fantastic C20 buildings by exceptional international architects and outstanding first- generation Indian modernists.  These include Le Corbusier’s Shodhan and Sarabhai houses, his Mill Owner’s Association Building and Louis Kahn’s Indian Institute of Management.  These were constructed in North West India because the progressive local elite, led by socialist-minded local mill owners, wanted to give the city global prominence through fine buildings.

Architect Rabindra J Vasavada (former Professor of Architecture, CEPT University, Ahmedabad), was an assistant to Louis Kahn on the Indian Institute of Management, and also prepared the recently successful World Heritage City Nomination for Ahmedabad.  He is currently advising on the conservation of the three closely related museums designed by Le Corbusier in Ahmedabad, Chandigarh and Tokyo, and will be one of our expert tour leaders when C20 Society visits India in November 2019

Rabindra will describe the highlights of C20 architecture in Ahmadabad and some of its lesser known masterpieces.  He brings first hand insight into the culture which produced what’s been called “one of the world’s leading museums of Modern Architecture”, and deep knowledge of current conservation issues in the city.

Members’ price: £8.00/ Non members: £12.00 (to include a glass of wine)
