Merton Park and Beyond - Saturday 20th July 2019 - 2.00 pm – approx. 4.30 pm |

Walk Leader: John Goodier

This is the first of two walks in the Merton Park and Morden Area looking at housing, infrastructure and railways.

The story starts in the late 19th Century with John Innes who moved to the area and started to develop a housing estate. Progress was slow and the estate was completed in the thirties. We will then go to look at interwar housing. During the walk we will see parks, churches, stations, a school and a health centre. We hope to have access to some of these. The walk will consider the process of developing an estate, and briefly consider the history of the area.

The walk will start at Wimbledon Chase Station, on the Sutton Loop, but you may find it easier to go Wimbledon, where there are facilities, and get bus 163 or 164 (Bus stop D outside Centre Court Shopping mall) to Wimbledon Chase. At the end of the walk we will take a bus back to Morden station.

Meeting point:  Wimbledon Chase Station, 1.50 pm

Finishing point: Morden Station, approx. 4.30pm
