Tottenham a Century of housing - A chronological journey of approaches to mass housing in the 20th century

9.45am – approx. 2.30pm | Saturday 7th September 2019

Host: Adam Coleman (architectural history researcher and Tottenham resident)

Our walking tour will trace a chronological journey of approaches to mass housing in the 20th century. We begin at Noel Park, a speculative development of terraced, cottage-style dwellings built by the Artisans, Labourers & General Dwellings Company (1881-1913). Nearby, White Hart Lane (now known as Tower Gardens) offers an example of a pre- and inter-war ‘cottage estate’, built in two phases by the London County Council (1903-15 & 1920-27). We then jump forward 40 years to visit Broadwater Farm, a concrete-panelled medium- and high-rise development built by Haringey Council (1967-73). A short bus ride takes us to Ferry Lane, a low-rise estate comprising textured brick and slate-hung upper-levels built by the Greater London Council (1971-81). We finish at Hale Village, a mixed-use development of housing, commercial floorspace, primary school and landscaped gardens designed to a Master Plan by BDP (2008-12).  There may be internal access to some of the buildings we are visiting.

We will be walking a distance of approximately 2 miles, with a short bus ride (or optional brisk walk) between Broadwater Farm and Ferry Lane. Please ensure that you bring a valid Oyster/debit card if you intend to use the bus.

Our C20 Society walk supports an engagement project delivered with Homes for Haringey. This project will include a tour of housing with residents to explore the lived architectural and social history of housing in Tottenham.
