The Stevenage Sportive Cycle Ride - Saturday 10th August - 10.00 am - 1.30 pm

Tour leader Elain Harwood

Stevenage was Britain’s first new town, designated in 1946.  How to design a new town from scratch, enticing people to exchange London for a new home, a new job in the fields of north Hertfordshire?  The development corporation’s chief engineer, Eric Claxton, was a keen cyclist, and as well as building new roads he laid out a system of cycle tracks across the town.  We shall follow Claxton’s route round the town, looking at the town’s five new neighbourhoods, ranging from the picturesque Broadwater and Bedwell to the Radburn planning of Chells and Pin Green.  We will cross the Fairlands Valley Park and look in particular at the town’s sculpture programme – much less well known than that in Harlow because it featured chiefly local artists.  Our circular tour will be on dedicated cycle paths and quiet roads.  It will end in the town centre with its pioneering pedestrianised (and threatened) town centre of 1954-8 full of period detail.

Meet at Stevenage Station, 10.00 am. Finish at approximately 1.30pm

Participants must provide their own bikes (the area is not all covered by a bike hiring scheme). The route is mainly on quiet roads and cycle tracks, but participants must undertake the tour at their own risk and wearing a cycle helmet is advisable.

Members   £15.00       Non members  £25.00
