28/09/2019 - 29/09/2019

28-29 SEPTEMBER 2019

Led by Tony Stokoe and Geoff Stow

A weekend in and around Plymouth, in recognition of the recent designation of post-war central Plymouth as a Conservation Area.

Saturday we will meet for coffee at the Athenaeum (Walls and Pearn 1958-61), from 10.30am, followed by a tour of the building.  At 11.30am there will be an introductory talk followed by a walking tour led by Simon Hickman, Principal Inspector of Historic Buildings and Areas, Historic England South West.  We will look at central Plymouth in relation to Abercrombie’s post-war plan and the recent CA designation of part of that plan.

During the walk we will visit the Unitarian Church, (1958), one of the two churches by Louis de Soissons in central Plymouth, featured in the recent ‘100 Churches 100 Years' C20 publication, the Theatre Royal, (Peter Moro 1978-82, recently listed), Pannier Market (Walls and Pern 1956-9 Grade II) and Colin Campbell Court (Barron and Rooke 1938-40). There will be access to the Guildhall, with what is regarded as one of the finest 1950s interiors outside London, and Council House and a view the Civic Centre which in the past has been a major case for our casework officers.  We will finish the day at the Lido, perhaps with an opportunity for a late autumn swim?!  On Sunday we will board a classic coach at 10.30am for a tour of the environs around Plymouth, including a look at the Ernesettle Estate, guided by Hilary Kolinsky of Plymouth Architectural Trust.  We will also visit the Church of the Ascension, Crownhill, (Potter and Hare 1958), also featured in the ‘100 Churches’ book.

Lunches will be ‘find your own’ on both days, with the opportunity to sample different cuisines from Italian to Vietnamese at one of the many cafés in the Pannier Market on the Saturday.
