Autumn Lecture Series - Forty Years On

The 2019 lecture series marks the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Thirties Society, now the C20 Society, with lectures that look at significant points in our history, celebrate what we have achieved and look to the future.

 

Thursday 31 October: Championing the Thirties

Alan Powers, the Society’s first caseworker and subsequent Chairman, tells the story of early casework campaigns, such as that to save Torilla, a 1935 house by F R S Yorke.

 

Thursday 7 November: Founding the Society

A panel of founding members, including Clive Aslet, Marcus Binney, Bevis Hillier and Simon Jenkins, talks about how the Thirties Society started and the impact of the loss of the Firestone building.

 

Thursday 14 November: Successful Campaigns: Red telephone boxes, End of the Line and Farewell my Lido

Nicholas Long, Niall Devitt and Alan Powers will talk about the successful campaigns the Society ran to save telephone boxes, tube stations and lidos.

 

Thursday 21 November: Brutalism Redux

How brutalist architecture was championed by the Society and a myriad social media photo feeds and the fight to list Preston Bus Station.

 

Tuesday 26 November: The Battle for Post-war Listing

Elain Harwood, who worked on the research and listing of post-war buildings for English Heritage, talks about the battle to win protection for post-war architecture through the listing system.

 

Thursday 28 November: Lost and Saved

Director of C20 Society Catherine Croft looks at the important C20th buildings that have been lost, those we have saved, and surveys how we can best protect those at risk.

All lectures at 6.30pm in the Gallery at 70 Cowcross Street, London EC1M 6EJ.  All lectures are on Thursdays except The Battle for Post War Listing which is taking place on a Tuesday.

Admission includes a glass of wine. Publications will be available to purchase on the night.
