30's Modernism

Thursday 6th August 2020, 18.15 for an 18.30 start

30's Modernism Presented by Alan Powers

Alan Powers is an architectural historian specialising in British architecture

Following the success of our 2017 series 'A Style Guide to Twentieth Century Architecture' we are now holding a series of similar lectures online.

Understanding architecture since 1914 involves understanding the meaning of labels and their underlying meaning.  While these labels are widely used, they represent a mixture of forgotten intentions, opportunistic adoptions, post-rationalisations and misapplications.

Speakers Alan Powers, Elain Harwood and Geraint Franklin will unpack the identity of five styles that have dominated the period and clear away some of the fog.

Modernism was meant to be more than a style - in fact the end of 'styles' as we know them.  It was a mission and a vision, rooted in formulae but reaching for eternity.  Was it destined to become a set of design cliches, like any other style, or did it achieve liberation?

We’ll send you a Zoom link by email after you book, which will enable you to “join” the event, and we’ll be using the Q&A function to take questions. If you’ve not used Zoom before, clicking on the Zoom link will take you through the set up process, hopefully simply and smoothly!  You should receive an automated link within an hour of booking so please check your spam/junk emails if you haven't received this.  Any further problems please contact coordinator@c20society.org.uk.

The event is free but we welcome donations towards C20’s campaigning here.

The Twentieth Century Society is a registered charity, no 1110244.
