Abbatt and the world of modern toys

Monday 23rd November 18.30 start

Presented by Alan Powers, introduced by Margherita Manca

Alan will discuss his recent book Abbatt Toys: Modern Toys for Modern Children, exploring the business founded by Paul & Marjorie Abbatt in London in 1932, after touring Europe and admiring early years education in Vienna, Berlin and elsewhere. Ernö Goldfinger designed their shop and some of their products as part of a clear-sighted vision for ‘the right toy for the right age’, and an unsentimental approach to childhood. Their wooden toys and puzzles brightened up homes and nurseries for 40 years and inspired other makers to follow their lead. Alan’s talk will look at the Abbatts’ achievement in the international context of its time.

We will be entering everyone who books a ticket to this event into a prize draw to win a signed copy of Alan's book.

The book is also accompanied by an exhibition Alan has curated at Margaret Howell's Wigmore Street store which unfortunately is now closed due to lockdown (but extended until 24th December), so this talk is a good alternative if you haven’t manage to see the display yet.

We’ll send you a Zoom link by email after you book, which will enable you to “join” the event, and we’ll be using the Q&A function to take questions at the end. If you’ve not used Zoom before, clicking on the Zoom link will take you through the set-up process, hopefully simply and smoothly! You should receive an automated link within an hour of booking so please check your spam/junk emails if you haven't received this. Any further problems please contact coordinator@c20society.org.uk.
