A socially distanced summer evening walk with Richard Walker and Elain Harwood from Goldfinger at the Elephant & Castle to Lasdun on the South Bank.

Starting with the Michael Faraday Memorial (Rodney Gordon, 1961), at the Elephant and Castle we will see buildings in the immediate area including Goldfinger’s Metro Central Heights (formerly Alexander Fleming House, 1962-67). Then we will meander through the streets of old Southwark seeing architecture of all periods finishing on the South Bank, with Herzog and de Meuron’s Tate Modern (1995-2000 and  2008-2016) and finally Lasdun‘s National Theatre (1961-1976), in time for a Waterloo sunset... weather permitting!

Richard Walker is an artist and resident of Metro Central Heights. Elain Harwood is an historian at Historic England and author of many books and articles on Twentieth-Century architecture.

Participants must bring a fully charged smart phone with a reliable internet data connection, headphones and have downloaded Zoom on their phones in advance of the tour. Remember to stay at least two metres apart from each other where required. Zoom joining information will be sent out to all participants with the confirmation email before the tour. Get in touch with kate@c20society.org.uk with any queries.

If you want to know more about the area around the Elephant and Castle the Director of C20, Catherine Croft, has written a guided architectural tour of Elephant and Castle as part of Open City’s Pocket London Tours.
