Trellick Tower and North Kensington Walk - Fully Booked

A socially distanced walking tour in north Kensington led by James Dunnett looking at Erno Goldfinger’s Trellick Tower and Cheltenham Estate (both 1968), Haworth Tompkins’ Silchester Estate (2018), Grenfell Tower by Clifford Wearden (1972, wrapped) and Dixon Jones’ St Marks Road housing (1973-5) and ending with CFA Voysey’s Horniman Pleasance (1914).
At Trellick Tower we hope there will be some internal access. We will also look at the adjacent vacant sites of Goldfinger’s former garage and Care Home which are likely to be redeveloped soon by Stirling Prize-winning architects Haworth Tompkins. They were responsible in 2013-16 for new housing round 20-storey Frinstead House (GLC 1969) nearby, part of the Silchester Estate, and were at first minded to do something similar at Trellick. This will be an opportunity to compare the sites and assess the suitability of their approach, as well as to experience the architectural power of Trellick Tower, compared to Frinstead House.
James Dunnett studied architecture at Cambridge and sculpture at St Martins, followed by working for Erno Goldfinger 1973-75 and the London Borough of Camden 1975-83.
Participants are requested to socially distance and wear a face covering during the walk.
Meet time/place: 2.30 pm Latimer Road tube station
Finish time/place: 4.30 pm Horniman Pleasance, return via Westbourne Park tube or buses from Harrow Rd
