Autumn Lecture Series: Mid-Century Modern 2 - Lina Bo Bardi and Brazilian architecture
Autumn Lecture Series: Mid-Century Modern 2 - Lina Bo Bardi
Thursday 28 October 2021 6.30 pm Online
Geraint Franklin will give an introduction to Brazil’s architecture of 30 key works by 30 twentieth century designers such as Niemeyer, Costa and Bardi as well lesser-known fascinating figures such as Lelé, Vilanova Artigas and Chu Ming.
Barry Bergdoll will discuss the Italian/Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992), who is now one of the most famous women architects of the twentieth century.
Lina was remarkably prolific and intriguingly idiosyncratic. A participant in the efforts to reshape Italian culture in her youth, she immigrated to Brazil in 1946, where her practice evolved within the social and cultural realities of her adopted country. While she continued to work with industrial materials, she added simple building techniques and naturalistic forms to her designs, striving to create large, multiuse spaces that promoted public life.
Barry Bergdoll is Meyer Shapiro Professor of Art History, Columbia University, New York and curator of exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, where in 2015 curated the exhibition Latin America in Construction Architecture 1955-1980.
Geraint Franklin is an architectural historian who works for Historic England.
