Clerkenwell North and South Walk - Fully Booked

A walk led by Penny Laughton that will include Bevin Court, Spa Green and Finsbury estates, Metropolitan Water Board buildings, and tours of the Paxton Locher House and 2021 RIBA Stirling Prize shortlisted 15 Clerkenwell Close (2017).
The walk starts at Bevin Court (1954) by Skinner, Bailey & Lubetkin where we hope to see the Peter Yates mural and the extraordinary staircase. Next, the New River Company estate housing designed by Lewis Solomon & Son and the Metropolitan Water Board buildings, including their grand offices (1920) and water-testing laboratory (1938).
We will look at two contrasting post-war social housing estates: the Spa Green Estate, by Tecton/Skinner, Bailey & Lubetkin (1946-50), and the Finsbury Estate, by Emberton, Franck & Tardrew (1964-8).
The walk concludes with Lubekin and Tecton’s Finsbury Health Centre, (1937-8), 1990s social and private housing, and access to the Paxton Locher House (1997). Finally, a tour by the architect Amin Taha of his 2021 RIBA Stirling Prize shortlisted 15 Clerkenwell Close (2017).
Participants are required to socially distance and wear a face covering indoors, and are asked to consider doing so during the walk in order to minimise risk to participants and others.
Penny Laughton is a long-time member of the society and was co-organiser its 2019 trip to Stuttgart.
