Anywhere but London! Inter-war Architecture across Britain

Anywhere but London! Inter-war Architecture across Britain

Thursday 2 December 2021 8 pm (note time)

Following John East’s talks earlier this year on 1920s and 1930s London architecture ‘in Lockdown’ some people asked, ‘what about the rest of Britain?’ John has risen to the challenge and travelled up and down the country photographing some of the best examples of inter-war architecture as well as revisiting his archive.

Starting with the aftermath of the first world war and the emergence of new forms of housing to meet the needs of returning soldiers, through to the flowering of the ‘Jazz Age’ and ‘Art Deco’ and the tentative introduction of the international movement to the UK, there is much to see from the 1920s. From the 1930s we shall see everything from Tudorbethan, Neo-Georgian, American ‘moderne’, the influences of Swedish and Dutch architecture, through to the creation of a distinctly British modernism towards the end of the decade.  We will enjoy old favourites as well as some lesser-known buildings from all corners of the British Isles…except London!

Members:  £4. Non-Members: £6.

We will send you a Zoom link by email after you book, which will enable you to “join” the event, and we’ll be using the Q&A function to take questions at the end. If you’ve not used Zoom before, clicking on the Zoom link will take you through the set-up process, hopefully simply and smoothly! You should receive an automated link within an hour of booking so please check your spam/junk emails if you haven't received this. Any further problems please contact coordinator@c20society.org.uk.
