The Twentieth Century Society

Campaigning for outstanding buildings

London in Lockdown: The 1960s

London in Lockdown: The 1960s

Thursday 16 December 2021, 8 pm (note time)

Following on from John East’s ‘Inter-War London in Lockdown’ lectures in January, the society’s ‘unofficial photographer’ has been on his bike again, and revisited buildings in London from the period 1945-1960.

John will include some of the iconic architecture in the capital during the radical of decades, the 1960s. He will look at the emergence of high-rise buildings, especially the flourishing of commercial architecture, new innovations to deliver council housing at scale, ‘pop’ architecture, the mainstreaming of ‘New Brutalism’, the emergence of ‘superstructure’ architecture and ‘hi-tech’ towards the end of the decade. He will show us well known buildings as well as those which you might not have come across before. Many of the photographs were taken over the last 18 months, and there will be some interiors from earlier C20 Society visits, and buildings which have become casework for the Society over the years.

Members:  £4. Non-Members: £6.

We will send you a Zoom link by email after you book, which will enable you to “join” the event, and we’ll be using the Q&A function to take questions at the end. If you’ve not used Zoom before, clicking on the Zoom link will take you through the set-up process, hopefully simply and smoothly! You should receive an automated link within an hour of booking so please check your spam/junk emails if you haven't received this. Any further problems please contact coordinator@c20society.org.uk.
