Battleship Berlin Film
Battleship Berlin Film
Followed by a discussion between the filmmaker Nathan Eddy and C20 Director Catherine Croft
Thursday 3 February 2022 8 pm
Nathan Eddy’s film Battleship Berlin (2021) is about the controversial Brutalist Mäusebunker, the former Laboratories of Freie Universität Berlin and now under threat of demolition. The Laboratories were designed by Gerd Hänska (1927–1996) in 1967–1970 and executed in two phases 1971–1975 and 1978–1981.
The film (40 minutes) tells the story of those who want to demolish the building and those fighting for an innovative, ecologically and economically sustainable adaptive re-use of this magnificent, uncompromisingly unique structure. Which side will triumph?
Nathan Eddy is an award-winning American filmmaker and journalist specialising in architecture and urban planning issues. His films include, The Absent Column (2013) and Starship Chicago (2017), which document the struggle to protect Chicago’s architectural heritage, and Helmut Jahn: In a Flash (2021) a film about the Chicago architect. Eddy also organized and led the successful protest movement to landmark New York City’s AT&T Building in 2017.
