Modern Houses Spring Back 2:  High Sunderland, Selkirk Lecture

Presented by Matt Loader and Iain KIng

Thursday 3 March 2022 at 8pm

The architect Peter Womersley (1923-1993) designed a handful of exceptional modern houses, including High Sunderland (1955) near Selkirk Scotland. The architects Matt Loader and Iain King of Loader Monteith will discss the technical and cultural restoration of High Sunderland, one of only two Category-A listed modernist homes in Scotland.

High Sunderland was the second house by Peter Womersley and built for textile designer Bernat Klein (1922-2014). Klein’s obituary by Elain Hardwood was in the C20 Magazine, 2014, Issue 3 p62. Klein’s daughter Shelley described growing up in the house in her best-selling memoir, ‘The See-Through House: My Father in Full Colour’ (2020) see C20 magazine review by Neil Jackson .

High Sunderland was sold for the first time through Modern House in 2017. While undergoing basic repairs the house suffered extensive structural and surface damage when a small fire broke out and to achieve modern environmental standards it required extensive and sensitive treatment by Loader Monteith.

Architect Matt Loader was co-founder of the Glasgow practice Loader Montieth n 2016. Iain King is a conservation architect at the practice. They work on conservation, residential, and commercial projects across the country.
