Giro de Goldfinger – A London Bike Tour

Led by Tim McInnes and Alan Morton

Saturday 2 April 2022

Meet time/place:  8.30am/outside Wetherspoons at Metro Central Heights in Elephant & Castle on Newington Causeway

Finish time/place: 2.30pm /Albemarle Street W1

Join members Tim McInnes and Alan Morton for a 32-kilometre six-hour bike tour across London with an introductory survey of Ernö Goldfinger’s work in the Capital. The tour is aimed for the experienced cyclist with a smartphone.

Ernö Goldfinger (1902-1987) is one of the most significant of London’s Post War modernist architects and we will visit 7 of the 15 buildings he designed that are listed by Historic England.

The ride starts at Metro Central Heights, (former Alexander Fleming House) in Elephant and Castle, grade II (1959-66)  and will take in: Brandlehow School, Putney, grade II (1950); Greenside School, Westville Road, Hammersmith, grade II* (1950);  Trellick Tower, North Kensington, grade II* (1968-72);  Willow Road, Hampstead , grade II* (1938) - the architect’s home; Regents Park Road, Camden Town, grade II (1954-6); and Albemarle Street, Mayfair, grade II (1955-7).

There will be a mid-ride coffee stop at the Trellick Lounge, which appears almost untouched since it first opened in the early 1970s.

The tour will be led by experienced cyclists and C20 members Tim McInnes and Alan Morton, who spent the recent lock down exploring London's C20 architecture.

Participants will need to have a smartphone to download a GPS route that will be emailed before the event. Given the distance covered all attendees will need to be experienced and familiar with riding on two wheels in London, they will be expected to be self-sufficient in the event of a puncture and experience of riding in groups is also necessary, for the safety of all riders. Participants undertake the tour at their own risk and the wearing of a cycle helmet is advised. Numbers are limited to 20 people and no interiors will be visited.

Members:  £3  Non-Members: £5
