William Mitchell London Walk
Led by Dawn Pereira
Saturday 21 May 2022
Meet time/place: 10.00 am/ Green Park Underground Station at top of stairs at South Side Entrance
Finish time/place: 4.15pm/Winstanley Estate near Clapham Junction Train Station
Dawn Pereira will lead a London walk of the sculptural work of William Mitchell (1925-2020) and share research from her forthcoming book on his work. She wrote his obituary for the C20 Magazine, Issue 1/2020 page 68-69.
Bill was a prolific concrete and glass fibre sculptor and known for his post-war public art throughout the UK. He was a good friend of the C20 Society, lecturing to us in his last years, and the Society has campaigned enthusiastically for the retention and appreciation of his work.
Highlights of the tour include a visit to the surviving mosaic mural of 1965 at the City of London Academy (former Islington Green School), which was saved by the quick actions of C20 and listed grade II in 2008.
Dawn will share insights into the Rochester Row concrete frieze on Emanuel House (1968), a former council carpark combined with a residential and office block, and discussed in the C20 book ‘My C20 Detail’ p 60.
The tour ends at Winstanley Estate to view a large body of work that unfolds throughout the housing development (1964-65) and an early example of Mitchell pushing concrete to its limits through collaboration.
Dawn Pereira was a Henry Moore Foundation Fellow (2017-19) and is currently a Terra Foundation for American Art Fellow (2020-21, deferred to 2022) researching William Mitchell's architectural sculpture nationally and in San Francisco and Hawaii.
Note, to travel between sites across the City, the walk will include using underground stations that do not have step free access.
