Trevor Dannatt (1920-2021) Study Day

Saturday 1 October 2022

Start: 9.30 am for 10.00 am Finish: 5 pm

Location: Fyvie Hall, University of Westminster, 309 Regent Street, London W1B 2HW (nearest Underground Oxford Circus)

A study day to celebrate the life and work of the architect Trevor Dannatt RA former President of C20 Society.

Trevor studied architecture at the Regent Street Polytechnic, the founding institution of the University of Westminster. In 1943 he worked for the modernist architects Jane Drew and Maxwell Fry. In 1948 he joined the London County Council’s design team to work on the Royal Festival Hall under his former tutor Peter Moro.

Trevor formed his own practice in 1952 and for over sixty years produced some of the most thoughtfully considered and beautifully detailed buildings of the age: private houses such as the Laslett House, Cambridge (1958) and right at the end of his career a house near Petersfield (2011); buildings for colleges and schools – halls of residence at Leicester and Hull (1960-64), the notable conversion of the historic buildings of the Old Royal Naval College for the University of Greenwich (from 1998), additions to Colfe’s School, Lewisham (1984) where he himself had studied; and buildings for worship such as the now listed Friends Meeting House, Blackheath (1972).

The speakers will be architectural historians, friends, family and colleagues of Trevor, including: John Bold, Peter Carolin, Harry Charrington, Catherine Croft, Adrian Dannatt, Liza Fior, Spencer de Grey, Elain Harwood, Ruth Lang, Jon Parry, Alan Powers, Rebecca Salter and Paddy Walker.

At lunchtime there will be an opportunity to see Trevor Dannatt’s South Bank Group papers held in the University of Westminster archives.
