In-Person: Public Art and Sculpture 5: William Mitchell from Honolulu to Stevenage Lecture

Thursday 17 November 2022 at 6.30 pm

The Gallery, 70 Cowcross Street, London EC1M 6EJ

Dawn Pereira will discuss the innovatory concrete sculpture of the 1970s by William Mitchell. His work in the US would influence his later work on returning to Britain.

As an authority on sculptured concrete, William Mitchell, was chosen to represent the Cement and Concrete Association in the United States during the late 1960s. International commissions followed in the 1970s and Dawn will discuss the murals and sculptures Mitchell created for the new Bay Area Rapid Transit system in San Francisco; his employment through the Hawaii’s State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and his part in a large civil engineering project in Honolulu city centre.

The cross-fertilisation of ideas between public bodies, contractors, architects, and the public in the United States impacted on how Mitchell approached these artworks. Dawn will share how specific successes and failures affected the subsequent subject matter, techniques and materials the artist adopted for commissions back home in Harwell and Stevenage.

Dr Dawn Pereira is an architectural sculptor historian, currently completing a monograph regarding William Mitchell’s integration of architectural sculpture into British post-war urban landscapes. The award of a Terra Foundation/PMC Fellowship has enabled her to expand on this research, to learn more about his lesser-known artworks in the United States.
