Tour of Bedales School, including Ernest Gimson’s Grade 1 listed Memorial Library with Otto Saumarez Smith and Alastair Langlands.
This is a tour of the buildings of Bedales School. The highlight is Ernest Gimson’s arts and crafts masterpiece Memorial Library of 1921. We will also see Gimson’s Lupton Hall. The event is to mark the publication of Alastair Langland’s new book The Buildings of Bedales. We will also see several other buildings, including the Art block (2016) by Fielden Clegg Bradley, and the Olivier Theatre (1996) by Hampshire County Architects. We will also see the first building built by Mary Medd, a former pupil.
Otto Saumarez Smith teaches architectural history at the University of Warwick, and chairs the Twentieth Century Society Casework Committee.
Alastair Langlands taught at Bedales from 1973-2001, and has recently published a book on Bedales architecture.
