Go Before it’s too Late: An Exploration of Public Libraries in North London
Led by Robert Drake on Saturday May 20th 9.30am - 5.15pm.
This Library day by coach in North London will focus on a roughly equal balance of inter-war and post-war library buildings, listed and unlisted. It will be a ‘tie- in with next our Journal No 13 on architecture of the public realm which will contain an article on Twentieth Century public libraries. The first will be Mervyn Macartney’s, Islington South library in Essex Rd (completed in 1914 but not opened as a library until 1921) in refined Arts and Crafts style then out to Muswell Hill (with mural), pre-war Palmers Green, post-war Hornsey, Wood Green, Ridge Avenue built for Edmonton originally and two from the 1930’s by Curtis and Burchett for Middlesex CC (Bowes Road near Arnos Grove station and listed Kenton). It will end at Kingsbury Underground (Jubilee line) at about 5.15 pm. Libraries are still closing, having their opening hours reduced or being radically changed threatening their interiors - the programme is thus subject to change.
