Hull and Doncaster with Elain Harwood - FULLY BOOKED

 

Friday June 9th to Sunday June 11th 2017

 

This is a packed weekend based in the City of Culture for 2017, looking at as much of its twentieth-century architecture as we can.

We start on Friday 9 June with a talk at the Danish Seamen's Church in the town centre at 6.30 for 7, so there is time to see the 1950s church, before local architectural historian David Neave gives a talk on the architecture of Hull concentrating on its post-war rebuilding. The Danish church is five minutes’ walk south from the main station (called Paragon Station) on the corner of Ferensway and Osborne Street.

There are plenty of hotels nearby. The Ibis is ideally placed opposite, and the more traditional Mercure Hull Royal Hotel is by the station. The Holiday Inn is five minutes further south and the Holiday Inn Express five minutes to the north. The city centre is small, with plenty of restaurants along Princes Dock and in the historic streets to the east, also noted for their ancient public houses.　

On Saturday 10 June we will depart by coach from outside the station at 9.45 for a tour of the university campus with its listed buildings by Leslie Martin, Peter Moro, Peter Womersley and Gillespie, Kidd & Coia, then we will look at churches, housing and other buildings in the suburbs, including the Humber Bridge. 　　

On the morning of Sunday 11 June (i.e. when it is quiet) we will perambulate the city centre, ending at the recently reopened Ferens Art Gallery, then at 12.30pm we will get the coach to take us to Doncaster, where (among other stops) we shall visit All Saints, Intake, by George Pace and the Wilkinson House by Peter Aldington – by kind permission of the owner, Bryden Rimmer. The coach will then drive to Doncaster Station, arriving there at 5.30pm (and then back to Hull if there is demand – let Elain know if you would like the latter option.)
