Brothers in Sculpture: Fleischmann, Charoux and Herkner

24th May 6.30 The Gallery 70 Cowcross Street

This talk traces the career trajectories of three sculpture students of the Vienna Academy (Arthur Fleischmann (1896-1990), Siegfried Charoux (1896-1967) and Friedrich Herkner (1902-1986)), who became at different moments around World War II, residents of the British Isles. Inspired by very different ideologies, they made disparate contributions to the cultural landscapes of the UK and Ireland. Inevitable tensions, given their conflicting beliefs, did not prevent friendship and some degree of collaboration being maintained in their new environment.

Interest in the work of émigré and refugee sculptors and artists has recently come under renewed interest through the role played by them in public art, shown in the recent English Heritage exhibition, and in the Twentieth Century Society’s casework to conserve their work.

Philip Ward-Jackson, who will give this talk, is the retired Conway Librarian of the Courtauld Institute.  He has written two books on London’s public sculpture, and continues to work on the European presence in British sculpture, predominantly in the 19th century.

This talk will be of interest in particular to C20 members who visited the Arthur Fleischmann museum on our recent visit to Bratislava.

Doors open 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start. We will have a selection of our publications to purchase for cash on the evening. We will also offer a glass of wine on arrival.
