Milton Keynes

Milton Keynes at 50 - Saturday 7th October - SOLD OUT

Led by Tom Brooks

This walking and coach tour will provide a broad overview of Milton Keynes’s architecture and planning by the MK Development Corporation, 1970–92.

The morning is an approx. 4 mile walk covering the key commercial and civic buildings of Central MK. We will visit one of the pioneering eco-houses built for the 1981 Homeworld Exhibition, and break for lunch in the celebrated Shopping Building, with an option to visit the designed landscape of Campbell Park nearby.

We will be collected by coach at 1.30pm to visit several areas which illustrate the different approaches taken to development outside CMK. This will cover a variety of housing and community buildings and may include work by Norman Foster, Jeremy Dixon, Edward Jones and Ralph Erskine. We will also visit the high-tech employment buildings at Kiln Farm, where we will be met by one of the MKDC architects John Dryden.

The tour will be led by Tom Brooks, Heritage Consultant at Alan Baxter, who has been assessing the significance of MK to inform the Council’s emerging New Town Heritage Register. He will give a perspective on this work and the wider debates about MK’s special character at this potentially significant turning point as it looks forward to the next 50 years.

Those who don’t want to take part in the morning walk would be welcome to join the group for the coach trip in the afternoon (which will involve limited walking at stop-offs). Please advise the leader Tom Brooks when we send out your joining email in the week prior to the trip. (Price remains the same)
