The Routemaster’s Guide to London’s Top Borough - Enfield & Grange Park

Saturday 7th April 2018
Led by: Joe Mathieson and Cela Selley

The Twentieth Century Society takes its first dip into the modernist buildings of London’s northern-most borough, Enfield. Initially a village detached from the centre, Enfield became fully integrated into the city’s economy during the late 19th century, excelling in computer technology and the weapons industry. Joe Mathieson will lead our Routemaster bus tour, which will explore the industrial Art Deco buildings and Brutalist council estates of its eastern neighbourhood, Edmonton. We also hope to visit a 2017 award winning development which was the first council-led social housing in LB Enfield for 40 years.

Towards the west of the LB Enfield, the tour continues looking at both of these styles in their more recreational and civic contexts. Highlights include the streamline-moderne Queen Elizabeth Stadium and the metallic brutalism of Enfield Civic Centre.

The heritage Routemaster will leave us around lunchtime in Enfield Town Centre, and the afternoon will continue on foot. Cela Selley will then lead the walk through the Town Park to the c20 conservation area of Grange Park, with c20 arts & craft style houses, a 1920s shopping parade, inter-war suburban housing and two churches. C H Brycliff’s Church in the Orchard is described by Pevsner as a striking Art Deco building and St Peter’s by Cyril Farey, built in 1941, is Scandinavian Classical.

Throughout the day, we will be considering the economic disparities of the Borough and its future prospects.

Please note: We will cover a lot of ground, and most buildings will be external views and ‘photo stops’ only.  The 20 minute footpath walk between Enfield Town and Grange Park is slightly uphill and, although tarmac, sturdy shoes are recommended. There is a public transport option to meet at Grange Park to see the churches and shopping parade.

Meet time: 10.00am Turnpike Lane Underground Station
Finish time/place: Around 4.30pm at Grange Park Station (trains every 20 mins to connect with Victoria Line at Highbury & Islington)

Members:  £40.00     Non members: £50.00
