Superstructures on the Move - a tour of Cambridge and Suffolk buildings with Alan Powers
Saturday 14th July 9.30am to 6pm
A joint event with the Sainsbury Centre at the University of East Anglia, this tour takes up the theme of their current exhibition, Superstructures: The New Architecture 1960-1990. Led by Alan Powers, the day will start in Cambridge, including exterior views of the Hopkins Schlumberger Research Centre, the Law Faculty by Norman Foster and other buildings before travelling by coach to Bury St Edmunds. Lunch at the Hopkins Visitor Centre at Ickworth House (National Trust) and an opportunity to tour the unique ovoid Neo-classical pile begun by the Earl-Bishop of Derry in 1795 will be followed by a visit to The Crystal Palace, an early Hopkins house in Bury, although not accepted by its architects’ as a proper example of their work owing to late interventions by the client. We will have the opportunity to look at other buildings in Bury before returning to Cambridge via St. Mary’s, Mildenhall, a superb example of that characteristically medieval form of Superstructure, the hammer beam roof. Alan Powers is former Chairman of the Twentieth Century Society and author of many books on C20 British art, architecture and design.
Programmed in association with the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts. SUPERSTRUCTURES: The New Architecture 1960–1990, an exhibition that marks the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, the first public building designed by the world-renowned architect Norman Foster. The exhibition runs until 2 September 2018.

16.30 St. Mary Mildenhall Church roof 'The structure is an arch-braced tie-beam roof, with queen posts rising to the ridge. The quality and complexity of the carpentry and the high standard of the carving suggest that top craftsmen were brought in from outside the locality. In the North Aisle the spandrels have some of the finest medieval carving in England’
