A Tale of Two City of London Estates: Golden Lane and Barbican - Saturday 21 July 2018

Meet 10.45am for an 11.00am start, Velorose Gallery, 1b Charterhouse Square, London EC1M 6EE. Nearest tube: Barbican

Led by David Rosenberg, Velorose

Led by architect/urban designer and local gallerist David Rosenberg, this tour compares and contrasts two City of London housing estates known more for their iconography than for their spatial qualities. Built side by side, with the same client and by the same architects, the estates are also contrasted in terms of their openness and the extent to which they are integrated within the City. One the result of an international competition, the other a direct commission on a vast scale, the briefs and aims for the two estates will be compared and contrasted in terms of the public and the private realms, as well as their shared and separate visions of the future, and approaches to the past. After tracing psychological, social and cultural processes alongside the more evidently architectonic and spatial, and once both estates have been seen and toured (they both function differently in terms of what one sees versus where one can move with ease), tour participants will be invited to make up their own minds about the relative successes of these two microcosms.

David has lectured about the estates to MSc and PhD students at UCL, as well as having lived  in both places, and this tour will draw on academic analysis and personal experience, as well as provide access to the private gardens of the Barbican (and perhaps to accommodation on both estates). Following the tour, there will be an opportunity to catch the last day of an exhibition of drawings and sculpture that touch upon issues of personal space and constraint.

Finish at approx 12.30pm at Velorose Gallery with an opportunity for refreshments and a viewing of the exhibition Alzbeta Jaresova: 'Fixed Position: Studies for a Hypothetical Environment'

Members: £15.00
