Newquay and the North Cornwall Coast - Friday 12th - Sunday 14th October 2018

Led by: Tony Stokoe and Robert Dowden

A weekend in the Surf Capital of Britain, a Saturday walking tour of the town and on the Sunday a drive around the environs in a 1964 vintage coach.

For those arriving on Friday 12th we will meet early evening for a drink in Newquay.  An email will be sent once time and venue have been confirmed.  Arrangements will be made for transport to the Pumping Station on Saturday morning for members arrinving by public transport.  The pumping station is approx 1.5 miles from the centre of Newquay. 

SATURDAY: The event will commence at 9.15am on Saturday at Towan Head Pumping Station (Stephen Taylor and Form Design 1998) for a 30 minute tour,  We will then commence a walking tour of Newquay.  Highlights will include:

'Red Rails', a 1930s house recently featured on George Clarke's "Old House New Home" for Channel 4
'Quesnelle', Cowell, Drewitt & Wheatley, 1954
The recent Duchy of Cornwall Development Tregunnel Hill by Hugh Petter and others
Newquay Library, J Hicklin, 1962 and St Michael's church, Ninian Comper, 1909-11, with later addition, S Comper, 1961

finishing at the Bristol Hotel at 5pm.

SUNDAY: Our classic 1964 Reliance Harrington Cavalier coach will depart from Newquay Railway Station at 9.00am for a tour including:

A visit to Newquay Police Station and Former Magistrates' Court, A Groves/Norman Robson Smith, 1973
Rialton Heights housing estate, Fieldon & Mawson, 1974
In Mother Ivey's bay we will view the RNLI station, Poynton, Bradbury, Wynter & Cole, 1996, and Polventon, Crowe & Careless, 1936 for Rick Stein's grandfather

We will also be visiting Newquay Aviation Museum and the mid-century and vintage fair at Bedruthan.

We will return to Newquay to finish at 5.30pm at the Railway Station.

NB: Both days involve a lot of walking so good footwear essential.
