Prague & Pilsen: A Bohemian Adventure - Wednesday 15th to Sunday 19th May 2019 - FULLY BOOKED

An exciting trip to the Bohemian lands in the Czech Republic to focus on the work of Adolf Loos in Pilsen and in Prague an introduction to the unique Avant Garde Cubist architecture with many other interesting buildings by significant Czech architects and others.

The tour, led by Robert Dowden of the C20 South West Group and local guides, will consist of::

Arrive 15th May into Prague on suggested 09:55 hrs BA flight out of Heathrow landing in Prague at 13:00 hrs. Organise your own transfer to Pilsen but as a suggestion try:

Accommodation at the Hotel Slovan (www.hotelslovan.pilsen.cz) will be booked for participants (cost of bed and breakfast included) which will be the meet point at 9am for:

Thursday 16th : A walk about in Pilsen with Petr Klima of PAM (www.pam.plzne.cz/en/). To include several Loos/Lhota apartments, Korunda Congregation House & Chapel, Jaroslav Fiser, 1935-6, Jaroslav, Police HQ, 1936-9, Cermak/Paul/Neckar, Czechoslovak radio Building, 1947-53, 1956, Tausenau , Hurta,  Pavelka , several commercial and public buildings as well as interwar villas.

A coach will then meet us and drive us to Central Prague.

In Prague organise your own accommodation. Suggestions:

  • AXA Hotel, 1932, impressive functionalist hotel with swimming pool & gym, on Na Porici, sensitively restored with reproduced furniture to match, bathrooms modern. Great value! www.axa-hotel.cz

  • Art Deco Imperial also on Na Porici. Not art deco but Nouveau completed in 1909. Beautiful restored interiors and wonderful restaurant. www.hotel-imperial.cz

NB: Both of these hotels are on Na Porici so choose accommodation nearby if possible. Tip: when booking compare booking.com (for example) vs direct booking with hotel. The latter is usually cheaper.

Friday 17th : Meetpoint 9am : AXA & Art Deco Imperial Hotel

A walk about in Central Prague with a little help from the Metro & Trams with professional guides Petr & Trevor. Highlights to include Bank of the Czechoslovak Legions, 1921-3, Josef Gočár, National Theatre, 1980-3, Karel Prager, Church of the Holy Heart 1932, Plečnik, TV Tower, Aulický, Kozák, 1985 -1991), Bata building, Kysela, 1927-29, Lindt Department Store Kysela, 1925-27, Diamant House & Arch 1912-13, Kracilek & Blecha and the several interwar arcades including Bondy & Broadway.

With lunch (cost included) at the cubist House of the Black Madonna, 1911-12 Josef Gočár

Saturday 18th : Meetpoint 9am : AXA Hotel

Coach tour of the Prague environs to see the interwar Baba Housing Estate, guided tour of Prague Castle, Plečnik & Rothmayer - various, guided tour of Villa Winternitz, Loos/Lhota, 1932, Cubist villas/apartments at Vysehrad, guided tour of Film Studio tour at Barrandov, Urban, 1931-4.

In the evening we meet for dinner (included) at the Manes Building, 1927-30, Otaker Novotny and dine by the beautiful Vlatava River. Meeting time to confirmed

Sunday 19th : Meetpoint 9am: AXA Hotel

Still to be finalised but will either be a coach trip to see 3 significant cubist houses and a church or a further day in Prague to be dropped off at Prague airport at 4pm to meet following potential flights:

BA flight to London City at 18:00 hrs and later flights to other London and UK regional airports

NB: In Pilsen If you have free time on arrival suggestions of things to do:

The Ladislav Sutnar faculty of design and art

Pilsner Urquell Brewery tour - a 90 minute well organised tour which the City is also famous for

COST: To include one night’s accommodation in Pilsen, one breakfast, one group lunch and one group dinner: £399 (members), £456 (non-members).

Please arrange your own outward and return flights, transfer from Prague airport to Pilsen, and three nights’ accommodation (Thursday, Friday, Saturday 16th-18th May) in Prague.
