Spring Lecture Series - Looking beyond the Bauhaus – Modernism sans frontières - Bauhaus Goes West

The Gallery, 70 Cowcross Street, London EC1M 6EJ - Thursday February 28th 2019 - Alan Powers, London School of Architecture

In 2019, the centenary of the Bauhaus is a major event with many exhibitions and publications. Yet this seems likely to add to the large existing pile of information based on only a small part of the actual achievements and aspirations of Modernism during the period of its existence. In Looking beyond the Bauhaus, the Twentieth Century Society looks more widely with the help of experts in a number of fields, to offer an exciting but more broadly-based account in which the Bauhaus can be seen in its contemporary context.

After the closure of the Bauhaus in 1933, its influence spread by reputation and through the migration of some of its chief figures to Britain and the USA. In his new book, Bauhaus Goes West (Thames and Hudson, 2019), Alan has assessed the real impact of this much-mythologised episode, and way that conceptions of the Bauhaus were both idolised and demonised in the years that followed.

Tickets: £8.00 members/£12.00 non members/£5.00 students

All lectures are held on Thursdays at 6.30pm in the Gallery at 70 Cowcross Street, London EC1M 6EJ.  Admission includes a glass of wine. Publications will be available to purchase on the night.
