100 Churches, 100 Years - A tour in North London, Herts and Harlow to celebrate its publication FULLY BOOKED

9.15am – 6.00pm | Saturday 27th April 2019

Led by Robert Drake

A church crawl in North London, Herts and Harlow led by Robert Drake to celebrate publication of our latest joint production with Batsford 100 Churches, 100 Years.   It is hoped to visit a selection of churches in the book (asterisked) and other churches by architects featured in it, some not visited before by C20 or not for some time. We hope to have contributions on them from some of the authors.

We will start at Golders Green Underground Station at 9.15am hopefully to visit St Albans*, North End Road, Golders Green by Giles Gilbert Scott (this may be done at the end of the day when we return to Golders Green)  and the Unitarian Church in Hoop Lane close by with mural by Ivon Hitchens.  We then head out for Hertfordshire in our coach, a timely visit as the revised ‘Pevsner’ for the county by James Bettley will have just been published. We see St Teresa, Borehamwood by F X Velarde and Partners (1963), the circular Marychurch* (to be confirmed), Old Hatfield by George Mathers (1970) and St Michael and All Angels by Cachemaille-Day (1956) and the triangular St John, South Hatfield by Peter Bosanquet (1960) then onto Stevenage for Seely and Paget’s St Andrew and St George* (1960) dominating the Town Centre (also our late lunch stop – find your own). We then go onto Harlow to see St Paul* in the Town Centre by Humphrys and Hurst with mural by John Piper (1961) and our Lady of Fatima* by Gerard Goalen (1958-60) with its superb dalle de verre glass by Dom Norris.  On our return to London we hope to fit in another church featured in the book possibly John Keble Church*, Mill Hill, a truly revolutionary structure by D F Martin-Smith of 1936 and then return to Golders Green Station by 6.00pm.
