A DAY IN DITCHLING - FULLY BOOKED Curator’s Tour of Max Gill:Wonderground Man Exhibition; Architect’s tour of RIBA award winning museum buildings; and guided walk to explore c20 work by Eric Gill, Frank Brangwyn and others in Ditchling village

The picturesque Sussex village of Ditchling was home to a group of internationally renowned artists and crafts people of the early 20th century: Eric Gill, Frank Brangwyn, Edward Johnston and Max Gill amongst others.
The Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft was established in the 1980s in the former Victorian school and the new museum opened in 2013. Designed by Adam Richards Architects, the scheme cleverly incorporates a collection of diverse buildings into a new and cohesive whole. The GII disused cart lodge was converted into a new entrance building and two new structures were placed between the cart lodge and school buildings to connect them and provide a new gallery and storage area. Adam Richards Architects won the RIBA South East Building of the Year in 2014 for the museum design.
Architect Adam Richards will join us to talk about the building.
The current exhibition is Max Gill: Wonderground Man. Max Gill, Eric Gill’s brother, was an architect, cartographer, designer and more. He designed a model farming village in Wiltshire; many maps and posters for London Underground and was appointed by the War Graves Commission to design the lettering on the Cenotaph.
Andrew and Angela Johnston and Caroline Walker, curators of the exhibition, will lead us on a guided tour.
Members will then be free to view the permanent collection.
After a break for lunch (find your own: small museum café or pubs and cafes in the village) Robert Drake will lead a guided tour of the village to look at the houses (exteriors only) lived in by the Ditchling artists and craftspeople in the village, notably Frank Brangwyn's house. We will also see Eric Gill's war memorial and hope to see work by John Denman in the church. We hope to arrange some internal access but this is not guaranteed.
Meeting point: Ditchling Museum 11.00am (or Hassocks train station 10.35am - trains from London Victoria and London St Pancras). As the museum is not well served by public transport and is 30 minutes’ walk from the station it would be helpful if anyone driving to the event could offer members a lift from the station.
Finishing point: Ditchling Museum 4.00pm (again if drivers can offer transport back to Hassocks it would be appreciated).
