Morden - A Railway Suburb

Morden – A Railway Suburb – Saturday 31 August - 2.00pm – 16.30
Led by: John Goodier
In our second visit to LB Merton we will be visiting Morden which became a railway suburb with the Underground in 1926 and the Sutton Loop in 1929. With the formation of the GLC the administrative centre of the Borough moved to Crown House, a speculative office block in Morden and the Borough added a Council Chamber and Library which we will visit. We will then explore the local retail, housing and infrastructure. Our exploration will end with a visit to the Baitul Futuh Mosque, which opened in 2003. It is the largest mosque in Western Europe. Currently they are building a new administrative centre to replace the previous building lost in a fire. Please note that in the Mosque people should be prepared to remove their shoes and it would be respectful for women to cover their hair.
Meet time/place: 2.00pm Morden Station Northern Line
Finish time: 4.30pm at the Mosque with a short walk past some fine mansion flat blocks and shops from the 1930s to Morden Station
Members £15, Non-Members £20
