East goes East

Led by: John East

As a finale to the Society’s 40th Anniversary and to mark the 30th Anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, John East, the Society’s unofficial photographer, will give a unique peek into architecture of our period behind the former Iron Curtain.  In the 1990s, the Society undertook ground breaking foreign trips to Eastern Europe.  Over the last decade these have been reprised as the Society has visited the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, the former GDR as well as the Baltic states of Estonia and Lithuania.  In a whistle stop tour of these countries and more, we will see some of the best examples of Jugendstil architecture, pre-WW1 cubist buildings, post-WW1 expressionism, 1920s and 30s modern movement housing estates through to little known Soviet Realism masterpieces and Brutalism, Soviet style.  We will also see functionalist cities, towns and futuristic transport infrastructure; the buildings of internationally known architects such as Jože Plečnik, Mies van der Rohe, Erich Mendelsohn, Alvar Aalto and Adolf Loos, as well as that by lesser known but very talented regional architects, and individual jewels by those now long forgotten.
