The extension to the Institute of Chartered Accountants (1970) is arguably the best 1960s building in the city. Sometimes described as Brutalist it is better viewed as a fine essay in contextualism. Paternoster Square is beside St Pauls cathedral, and was the site of a major 1990s showdown between classical and contemporary approaches to redevelopment. The Masterplan was by Whitfield (1999), whose office designed some of the buildings, whilst Whitfield selected leading architects such as Eric Parry and MacCormac Jamieson Prichard to work on others constructed 2000 - 2003. We will look at the development in detail (exteriors only).
Roland Jeffery has been a trustee of the Society and until retirement was involved in a range of historic building projects across the UK. He is currently writing a monograph on the work of William Whitfield in the C20 series Twentieth Century Architects.
