Modern Houses Spring Back 1: Serge Chermayeff, New Haven, USA Lecture

The architect Bruce Coldham will talk about the recent refurbishment of the house Serge Chermayeff (1900-1996) designed in 1962 for himself in New Haven, USA. In Britain Chermayeff is famous for the timber-built home for himself Bentley Wood, Sussex, 1938 and listed Grade II in 2020.
Chermayeff emigrated to the USA in 1940 and built little during his later career. His single story house at 28 Lincoln Street was built as a demonstration of this theories of courtyard planning and as a model to replace the standard American suburban home. It is close to Yale where he was teaching at the time. The house has only changed hands twice and was neglected but largely unchanged. The new owners engaged Bruce Coldham, an architect with a longstanding commitment to low-energy building, to make largely invisible upgrades to the services and spaces.
Bruce Coldham founded his own architectural practice in Amherst, Mass in 1989 focussing on ecologically sustainable design and co-housing.
