REDISCOVERING REGIONAL PRACTICES 1: Stout and Litchfield Lecture

Presented by Elain Harwood

Thursday 24 March 2022 at 8 pm

Elain Harwood will discuss Stout and Litchfield who were a small London-based practice founded in the early 1960s specialising in private houses and conversions, and later involved in the self-build movement.

Roy Stout and Patrick Litchfield were students together at the Royal West of England School of Architecture in Bristol, who formed a practice in the early 1960s.  They had previously worked for the London County Council and Richard Sheppard & Partners respectively.

At the time the practice were known for their private house conversions, but today are recognised for a series of small one-off houses, beginning with a weekend retreat for Milton Grundy at Shipton-under-Wychwood (1964), which led to a house at Somerton Erleigh, (1973) and  spectacular houses in Ferry Street overlooking the Thames on the Isle of Dogs for Dr Michael and Jenny Barraclough (1979).   Michael Barraclough worked with housing associations and self-build groups, and while his own scheme produced only four houses (including his own) it led to a larger self-build scheme behind (1990).

Elain Harwood is an architectural historian at Historic England and has written extensively on the architecture of the twentieth century. She is co-editor of  the C20 Journal where she wrote about Stout and Litchfield in the  Journal 12: Houses (available from the Society on line for the special price of £10 while stocks last)
