REDISCOVERING REGIONAL PRACTICES 2: Austin Vernon & Partners in Dulwich Lecture

Presented by Ian McInnes

Thursday 31 March 2022 at 8 pm

Ian McInnes will look in detail at the design and construction of the 1960s residential estates in Dulwich planned by the Dulwich Estate architect, Austin Vernon and Partners.

He will cover the impact of changes in government planning policy on the area and examine the layout of a number of the estates and the design and planning of individual houses.

From the late 50s to the early 70s the Dulwich Estate’s architect, Austin Vernon & Partners, championed high quality, thoughtful designs which responded to the aspirations of their young owners. Largely built by Wates, the design ingenuity shown, particularly the innovative use of landscaping, courtyards and split levels, is an exemplar in a period when the design of new housing was seen as an integral part of Britain's modern society.

The result was 2000 classic mid-century modern houses which have responded flexibly to the test of time and are increasingly valued by residents and experts considering how to build sustainable communities.

Ian McInnes is an architect, C20 chair and co-author of a recent book on the work of Austin Vernon ‘Dulwich Housing Mid-Century Oasis’ that is available from The RIBA Bookshop online and at 66 Portland Place.
