A full day in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, led by Julia Lane with Elain Harwood and showcasing Art Deco as well as listed post war buildings by Henry Fedeski (1907-93) and Frederick Gibberd (1908-84).
Our fascinating day in elegant Royal Leamington Spa will start with our first views from the train of the late Art Deco Rangemaster Offices moments before arrival. This will get us in the mood for a brief encounter with the Art Deco station built for the Great Western Railway in 1939 (listed grade II) with restored waiting rooms and lavatories.
Tour highlights will include: local architect Henry Fedeski’s Festival-style Lillington Library (1959-60) (mentioned in Elain Harwood’s C20 ‘Mid Century Britain’) and the adjacent stunning Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady (1963), both listed grade II; two housing estates and other buildings by Frederick Gibberd, who was born and brought up nearby; Art Deco will be represented by 1920s and 1930s cinemas, shops and a listed dance hall the Bath Assembly Rooms,
The tour will be a mix of walking and coach. There will be a stop for lunch (please note that you will need to arrange your own and the cost is not included).
Train from London departs Marylebone Station at 8.00 am arriving 9.29 am.
