Church Art and Architecture - A Kentish Pilgrimage

Led by Alan Powers and Julia Twigg

Saturday 9 April 2022

Start: Ebbsfleet International railway station 9.00 am (car parking available)

Finish: Ebbsfleet International railway station 5.30 pm

An all-day coach trip exploring art and architecture in north-west Kent, starting and finishing at Ebbsfleet International Station.

Close by, Our Lady of the Assumption, Northfleet, by Sir Giles Scott, (1913-16), which rises dramatically above the Kentish chalk pits. Amid medieval fragments, St Mary’s Abbey, West Malling, was enlarged with an Abbey Church and Cloister designed for Anglican Benedictine nuns by Robert Maguire and Keith Murray, (1964-6). Then comes All Saints, Tudeley, with its superb set of Marc Chagall windows (1963 and 1974) of European importance.

At The Friars in Aylesford, we will have lunch (cost not included) and explore the ceramic, glass and design work of the Polish refugee artist Adam Kossowski, within the setting of pilgrimage chapel buildings designed by Adrian Gilbert Scott, (1958-65).  The final visits will be to two notable post war churches, Holy Trinity,  Twydall by Ansell & Bailey, (1963-4), spot listed with support from C20,  and St Matthew, Wigmore, by Peter Bosanquet & Partners, (1963-5) described in the Buildings of England as ‘the finest late C20 church in the county.’

Alan Powers is a former C20 Chairman. Julia Twigg is a long-standing member of C20.
