List Me Quick – A Lancastrian Seaside Weekend

Start: Friday 1st July 3.00pm Blackpool Tourist Information

Finish: Sunday 3rd July 4.30pm Preston Station

A coastal weekend away based in Blackpool, led by Andrew Jackson with our expert Elain Harwood, visiting the twentieth century highlights of the Lancashire coast and the seaside towns of Blackpool , Fleetwood and Morecambe, and finishing in the city of Preston.

Friday afternoon, Carl Carrington (Head of Planning & Conservation, Blackpool Council) leads a tour of the Winter Gardens, including Blackpool Opera House (Charles Mackeith, 1938-9), followed by an early evening talk with drinks.

Saturday begins with a coach trip to the Pleasure Beach to see Joseph Emberton’s Casino (1937-40). From there we visit several outlying churches, including Our Lady of Lourdes Thanksgiving Shrine (F. X. Velarde, 1955-7), before lunch in Thomas Mawson’s Stanley Park (1926). A quick stop at Forton motorway services (T. P. Bennett & Partners, 1963-5) is followed by a stroll around Mawson’s War Memorial Village (1919 onwards), then to Morecambe and the Midland Hotel (Oliver Hill, 1932-3).

Sunday the coach takes us north to St Nicholas’ Church, Fleetwood (Lawrence King, 1960-2) and then east to Preston and St Mary’s Church, Leyland (Weightman & Bullen, 1962-4) and the recently restored Preston Bus Station (BDP, 1967) with lunch at Brockholes Nature Reserve.

NOTE: Hotel and lunches are not included in the ticket price. The recommended hotel is Premier Inn Blackpool (North Pier), which is where the coach will depart from each morning. The coach will return to Blackpool on Sunday for those with cars.

Andrew Jackson is a C20 Trustee and responsible for coordinating the Society’s Regional Groups.
