Dulwich – Mid-century Oasis Walk

Saturday 16th July 2022

Meet time/place: 10.30am/outside Gipsy Hill Station on Gipsy Hill

Trains: 10.01 from London Bridge; 10.06 from Victoria (may be affected by engineering works). Alternative: Train Brixton or Herne Hill and take No. 3 bus or plenty of on-street free parking nearby

Finish time/place: 4.30pm/Sydenham Hill Station

Ian McInnes will lead a walk looking in detail at the design and construction of the Mid-century modern residential estates in Dulwich planned by the Dulwich Estate architect, Austin Vernon and Partners. Largely built by Wates, the estates are exemplars of the period.

Beginning at the Dulwich Wood Park Estate (Dulwich’s Ville Radieuse), a short bus ride will take us to two other estates planned on Radburn principles (with interior visits). A late lunch stop at the Alleyn's Head (or nearby cafes) in West Dulwich will be followed by visits to some smaller estates nearby, an interior visit to the brutalist Christison Hall (1965-69) at Dulwich College and we will finish on the College Road Estate with drinks in the chairman's garden.

Ian McInnes is C20 chair and co-author of the recent book ‘Dulwich Housing Mid-Century Oasis’ - available from the RIBA Bookshop.

Members: £25.  Non-members: £30
