Modernist Marylebone Evening Walk

Thursday 4 August 2022

Start time/place: 6.30pm/outside All Souls Church, Langham Place

Finish time/place: 8.30pm/Oxford Circus

Suzanne Waters will lead an evening walk looking at some of the interwar and post war modernist buildings in Marylebone, with a particular focus on the RIBA and BBC.

The walk is partly inspired by the RIBA 2019 exhibition ‘Beyond the Bauhaus’ and the recent Survey of London volumes on Marylebone (2017). Largely a residential area with some fine 18th century buildings which start to be significantly redeveloped from the early 20th as the character of the area changed.

We will focus on the modernist interwar buildings, most notably the RIBA headquarters by Grey Wornum (1934) and the BBC designed by G Val Myers (1931). Also, we will see some little-known buildings such as a former car showroom by Joseph Emberton in Great Portland Street (1937), and a house by Grey Wornum in Weymouth Street.  Continuing the modernist theme, we will explore post war examples, such as the substantial City of Westminster housing at Carburton Street of 1984, and the former Post Office Tower by MPBW (1964) on Cleveland Street.

Suzanne Waters is an architectural historian, who is currently cataloguing a recent acquisition by the RIBA of drawings belonging to Alexander Redhouse. a former associate of Denys Lasdun.
