Cockfosters Evening Walk
Tuesday 9th August 2022
Start time/place: 6.00 pm/Entrance to Southgate Underground Station
Finish time/place: 8.30 pm/Cockfosters Underground.
John East will lead an evening walk from Southgate to Cockfosters looking at some fascinating and unusual inter-war and post-war examples of London’s suburban architecture, including two of Charles Holden’s best 1930s stations for the Piccadilly Line.
Starting with Southgate we look at the town centre, then to Oakwood to look at the extraordinary modernistic Belgium monastic church of Christ the King, designed by Dom Constantine Bosschaerts (1940) as well as St. Thomas Church, Romilly Craze (1938-41), and followed by De Bohun School one of the best of the 1930s Middlesex County Council Schools, designed by the county architects, Curtis and Burchett (1936).
We finish at Cockfosters with another 1930s Holden station and an opportunity for a drink at the 1930s Spanish Hollywood style roadhouse, The Cock Inn. En-route we will of course see much else of interest.
John East has been a member since the 1980s and has led many events and walks over the last 30 years. He is the Society’s unofficial photographer.
