A Trevor Dannatt Homecoming: A Walk around his native Greenwich & Blackheath
Friday 30 September 2022
Start time/place: 12.30 pm/outside Cutty Sark DLR station
Finish time/place: 4.15 pm/Blackheath Quaker Meeting House, three minutes from Blackheath rail station
This walk led by John Bold, Alan Powers and Elain Harwood is a celebration of the life of former President of C20 Society Trevor Dannatt (1920-2021) ahead of our conference devoted to his life and work on 1 October. He grew up in Westcombe Park, and our walk will take us past his childhood home and works by his uncle Percy Boothroyd Dannatt, who was an influence on him becoming an architect.
But first we will see Trevor’s extensive alterations to the Royal Naval College by Sir Christopher Wren and others, led by specialists John Bold and Alan Powers who have taught there, and Elain Harwood. We will work our way up to Blackheath via a house and housing in Langton Way (1960s), culminating in two contrasting places of worship in Blackheath, the adjoining Congregational Church of 1957 (now offices) and Quaker Meeting House of 1972.
UPDATE: the walk will end at Trevor’s former home in Peckham with a tour and tea, generously hosted by his widow Ann Dannatt. We aim to catch the 4.28pm train from Blackheath to Peckham Rye.
NOTE: The walk involves a strenuous uphill walk through Greenwich Park to Blackheath.
